Subject: Playing with Fire......

I was watching RED PLANET last night (the movie where they try to terra-form Mars and end up bringing home a load of creepy bugs...Val Kilma stars with the hot chick from the Matrix) and I got to thinking how the special effects boys & girls had done a great job with the explosions and fire type stuff. Then I thought about how difficult fire is to create in Bryce...well it is for me.

So just for the hell of it (how appropriate) I grabbed about 60 frames of fire and zipped them up. What you see above is just yours truly messing around with 3 different screen-grabs and trying to apply them in a Bryce kinda way. Now I'm thinking that some of you with time on their hands might like to see what you can do with them......its a 4mb zip if you want them....

Fire is always hard. your fire doesn't look bad, but it needs some volume transparency to match I think... so... which hot chick from the matrix is in that movie? monica belluci? (trying to find out how worth watching that movie is :P)

Clay's volumetric fire has always been my fire mat of choice. It is the mat that I use to develop my aerial explosions and flak mats with. I am really interested to see what you have come up with TheBryster. I find that no matter what fire I make, that it is made significantly better through post work with clone brushes, layers, and pictures of actual fires.

Can volumetric fire in Bryce be animated? I've been thinking about using Bryce for an animation I am trying to produce, but I need to make animated fire. One of the most realistic explosion/fire effects I've ever seen done has to be the one in the video shown in the thread I've linked to above. He used particles to get the effect in that video, and it's very much what I'm trying to accomplish. However, I don't have access to the software he is using, so I have to find another way. I know Bryce doesn't have particles (yet), but I'm thinking maybe animated metaballs with volumetric fire materials? Any thoughts?

fire could be animated, if you have an object to move around (or a collection of them). Since it's a mat, it would have to be applied to something 'solid' in order to work. Now beyond that, I have no idea..;)

Clay's fire is really amazing...i made a fire mat for a challenge ages ago...i bet it's on my other machine though.

I've tried metaballs for volume fire, but it's not really all that great. it's hard to get volume materials to behave correctly, and the shape of blended the metaballs doesn't look too much like fire either.

Why do u need frontpage to upload a file? lol. just upload it through ftp...

a hyperlink to it is programmed with:

put the clickable text or image u want to have on screen here

(sorry, not a fan of frontpage hehe, just had to provide the alternative option)

Clay's fire, Clay's fire, rah rah rah! Brilliant stuff. Bryster, the first one looks best to me, but I agree about adding volume.

Thanks, UVDan, for that tut! I'm getting Bryce tonight and giving it a go.

Referring to toolz: I don't think it's possible to get an explosion, animated or otherwise, to look that good in Bryce. I could be wrong, but it seems to me that Bryce just isn't cut out for that sort of thing. Metaballs sound like a really good idea to me, and could work if you could find the right volumetric cloud material (Bryce does come with some great ones), but personally I'd be scared off by the render times. Hope you have a renderfarm ;)
